| Objective To comprehensively the current status of motor rehabilitation competence among rehabilitation physicians in China and identify their training needs, thereby providing an evidence base for developing targeted competency training standards. Methods A questionnaire was designed following expert panel review and administered via an online survey to rehabilitation physicians across hospitals of all levels in mainland China. Data were analyzed to compare differences across regions and institution levels. Results A total of 1,219 valid questionnaires were collected from 30 provincial-level regions. The results indicated that the overall self-assessed clinical core competence of rehabilitation physicians was good, with 15.8% rating themselves as excellent and 51.1% as good. Competence in the assessment and treatment of neurological diseases was the highest, with 55.0% and 53.2% of physicians reporting they could work independently in these areas, respectively. Conversely, assessment of cardiopulmonary function and athlete-specific assessment were relatively weak. Weaknesses were mainly concentrated in formulating rehabilitation plans for complex cases (61.9%), operating emerging rehabilitation technologies (61.3%), and interdisciplinary collaboration (58.9%). Equipment configuration showed regional and institutional disparities, with tertiary hospitals and the eastern region demonstrating significant advantages. Overall research capability was weak; most physicians had not published papers (62.0%) or undertaken research projects (66.7%). Training needs focused primarily on improving practical skills in musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation, with offline practical training remaining the most preferred form of continuing education. Conclusions The development of the rehabilitation physician workforce in China still faces challenges such as a shortage of specialized professionals, uneven resource distribution, and weak capabilities in handling complex cases. It is recommended to establish a tiered and categorized training system, strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration and training in emerging technologies, promote the flow of high-quality resources to grassroots levels, and innovate training models. These measures will help build a high-quality rehabilitation physician workforce and support the implementation of the Healthy China strategy. |
